They open up to a big scary world
Milliseconds separate one revolution from the next
They witnessed your first steps
Saw the first tear rolled down your cheeks
Grew big like watermelons when you hit the gas and not the break
They filled with hope
As the yellow school bus approached your front door for the first time
As time goes on
Weaker and weaker their muscles become
Never knowing when the last moment
Will be captured on their cranium camera
The growing number of bottles in the medicine cabinet
Is a silent reminder that no one can escape time
And that there is a price to pay for partying like a rockstar in your younger days
Every chance these old eyes get look at the masterpiece
Within you that they have created
They do everything in their power not to let you see them in pain
In the waiting room funeral cost flood their mind
Something is telling them that the end is near
They hold your hand tighter than they ever have before
As you walk into your childhood home
And help them put these aging eyes to bed
They look at you desperately for one more hug.
Your embrace says more than any goodbye ever could
In the morning you find out
That their eyes have finally made the transition
And now their eyes they are helping God watch over you.
